Dr. LaTonya Martin Rogers is originally from Delray Beach, Florida. She moved to Atlanta to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education at Morris Brown College. LaTonya has a master’s degree in public administration and completed a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Educational Leadership.
My background of community service and effectiveness in leadership roles both in professional settings and in community action environments make me the ideal candidate for this position.
As a former elected official who vacated the seat due to personal reasons I have not stopped being fully engaged in my community. I currently serve on the East Point Cultural Enrichment Commission, the East Point Preservation Alliance, the East Point Historical Society, the East Point Census Committee, Tri-Cities High School Alumni Association, South Fulton Parents for Education, The Parent University Founder (online platform for parents), CASA (court appointed special advocate), and an inaugural member of Market 166.
There has been a lack of People First leadership in Ward D. I have always felt the need to serve the community in an official and unofficial capacity. As a person working unofficially there are certain limitations to the work. However, as a former city council member there are initiatives and policies that I have instituted for the betterment of my community.
When we work together, we don’t have to wait on anyone else to improve our community.”
– LaTonya
The protection and safety of our citizens is law enforcement’s primary goal. It is a means to maintain order and protect the public.
It’s important to strategically invest in our present community with an eye on the future. Central to the growth of the City of East Point is improving the downtown area. Community improvements should be grounded in sustainable practices to ensure a holistic solution for all parts of the City of East Point.
Beyond vehicular transportation, we need to prioritize investments in greenspaces that include sidewalks, walking trails (where possible) and bike lanes. We must make sure these amenities are accessible to ALL our citizens, wherever they live. Investments in greenspace and infrastructure throughout our city will benefit current families and future generations.
Meaningful, inclusive community engagement is important, even critical, to community well-being. This includes engaging diverse, usually underrepresented, or overlooked, in the decision-making process that affects their lives. Community engagement increases the visibility and understanding of issues and empowers communities to have their say over decisions that affect their lives, their towns, cities, and neighborhoods.
There are several priorities that require immediate attention which include but are not limited to; policy and legislation that is helpful to our communities, helping to maintain the quality of life for all citizens in East Point, creating outlets for the diverse population in East Point, expanding resources and recreational activities to residents of all communities in East Point.
When we work together, we don't have to wait on anyone else to improve our community.

One concrete goal for my term in office is to develop a Ward D Advisory Council.
Economic Development: Since 2016, 56 warehouses/industrial buildings have come into East Point. Twenty-six of those buildings are in Ward D. There are so many opportunities that surrounding cities have taken advantage of. As I witness these areas come into their own with Economic Development I realize that East Point has the potential to do the same.
The City of East Point has a Strategic Economic Development Plan with a focus on expanding the business sector, targeting downtown development/retail, improving the business environment and enhancing the life of East Pointers.
The City of East Point adopted a 2021 Equitable Growth and Inclusion Strategic Plan, the city established an Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Empowerment. This office promotes equity, inclusion, and empowerment through policies, procedures, and practices. East Point leveraged CARES Act money to provide for residents needing food, rental/mortgage assistance and business support. There was also the incorporation of other services for senior residents that needed landscaping services.
Although Ward D is the economic hub of the city, since 2016, 56 warehouses/industrial buildings have come into the city and 26 of those buildings are in Ward D. The fabric of many of our communities have changed and the voices of the residents have fallen upon deaf ears. The residents in Ward D have been neglected and underrepresented in a multitude of ways through no fault of their own.
I think these questions have covered the depth and breadth of my campaign platform and what I would like to see in the City of East Point. Georgia.
Thank-you you for extending this opportunity to express my thoughts!
